STUDENT-CENTRED LEARNING AND EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
BYOD – BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE UPDATE

BYOD FOR SEPTEMBER, 2013
Based on the success of the BYOD implementation across the College in 2012, we are expanding the compulsory program for students from Grades 6 to 12. Students in Grades 4 and 5 may opt to bring a device but are not required to do so; HSC will continue to provide laptop and computer lab. resources for these students in 2013-14.

Students are NOT required to register their devices in advance. All students must sign an Acceptable User Agreement (AUA).

The BYOD program supports the transformation in teaching and learning we have been building over the last few years and complements our strategic priority on student-centred learning. HSC supports both Mac and PC platforms and the full campus has wireless access in all areas that are dedicated student learning spaces.

Based on our in-house research with students and teachers, we have determined that a laptop tool serves the greatest array of educational needs at this point and that there are some limitations with current tablet (iPad style) devices for full academic work. We found that students preferred to bring multiple devices for a variety of purposes. We are all aware of the rapid change and continuous evolution in the technology world and being flexible and adaptable to change are key to the success of the BYOD program.

INFORMATION HANDBOOK – SUPPORT FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS
To provide students and parents with more detailed information about specific requirements for devices and expectations, we have created a BYOD Handbook. Please take time over the summer to become familiar with the information and procedures in this resource. The Handbook includes helpful details in the following areas to assist with the transition to a full-scale BYOD program:

1. The WHY of BYOD
2. Types of Devices – user needs, purchasing, software options
3. Registering Devices for Wireless Access – no registration required
4. HSC Expectations
5. FAQ
6. General Care of the Device
7. Technical Specifications

SUMMER SUPPORT AND CONTACT
While the handbook is comprehensive, we anticipate on-going questions from parents and students as you make your decisions about devices. There are several ways we will provide support to our families over the summer.

1. Phone contact to IT manager Brad d’Hondt 905-389-1367, ext. 111
2. E-mail contact to byod@hsc.on.ca or to zwolak@hsc.on.ca
3. Contact with School Principals

We will revise the handbook and provide updates, as appropriate, based on inquiries and new developments that support BYOD access. We want to be sure to keep the information current and focussed on your needs.
